On your english page, tell me about which trailer captured your attention. Why? Who do the characters remind you of? What do you think the story is about? What can you discern about the setting of the trailer? What can you discern about the historical relevancy of the story? Which book are you the most interested in? Why?
The trailer for "the help" because I have seen the movie and I think the movie is really good. I love how its about people rising up to what's wrong and making the world a better place. I have grandparent that has told me about how he lived through the whole change and how it effected the people around him and I think the book would be good to read because its usually for detailed.

The cause of homelessness
1.Social
2.Political
3.Economic
4.Environmental
1. Family problems such as abuse, lack of care, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, mental issues or disabilities, gambling, shopping
2.War, Terrorism, Jail, Gangs
3.Lack of employment and affordable housing, low wages
4.Natural disasters (floods, hurricanes)
Homelessness is an issue that I have seen and sometimes its hard to sympathise because you may not know that persons story. Many of the very unfortunate causes of homelessness in my opinion is low wages, natural disasters, problems at home, mental issues, unaffordable housing and lack of employment because these people don't have a choice to be homeless or not. Another cause of homelessness is addictions/substance abuse and gambling. I can sympathize in certain cases, but its hard when someone brings it on themselves. Like for most people they start with a normal life but the drugs take them over and cause them to spend all their money or get kicked out. I definitely think that being homeless is either cause by the world around them or themselves. When its the world that has caused someone to become homeless its easier to sympathise because they didn't cause the problem. War and terrorism can also cause homelessness but from what I've seen around my city its not a problem here but has been around the world lately. Gangs have been an issue around here and I'm sure many places but from what I know its a big problem around the world
Ragged Company...
The characters in the novel have very unique names. In some cases, these are their given names, but in others, they are names that have been given to them by friends, and others who have shared time with them. For each name, give one work, and one image that the name you think the name might symbolize.

Ragged Company
1. List a number of settings that are described in the novel. Explain how each one contributes to the overall plot of the novel. Give one quote from the novel that you think best describes the setting. (Minimum of 5)
Movies: The movies contributes to the plot of the book because the movies was an escape for them and they cherished it and that's also where they Granite. QUOTE "then the lights began to fade and everyone settled deeper into their seats" page 49
Lotto office: The lottery office is what basically what will change their life and end a big struggle for them. QUOTE "thirteen and a half million dollars? I go and i hear the old lady gasp behind me" page 82
The streets/Digs : The streets is where they met each other and shaped each others lives. QUOTE "it was like a lay over top of the city and dug its fingers in all around it" page 40
Hotel room: The hotel room plays a role in the story plot because this is where they learn to live a "normal" life again but they all learn together.
Granite's house: Granite's house i think is important because this kinda helped prove to the rounder that he wasn't there to judge or anything like that he was there as a friend.
2. Who do you think is the leader of Ragged Company. Describe the qualities that this leader has. Do you see their role changing as the circumstances of the group change? Why?
I think the leader of the group is One for the dead, i see her as the mom of the group because shes the only girl in the group and she is more of the softer edged. She has also been through very traumatic stuff which has caused her to be very wise and that is one of the main things a leader should have. I do not know if the roles will change but if it does i think it would be digger because he is very assertive and in the end hes the one that found the lotto ticket.
3. Describe Digger’s life before he became homeless. What made him happy? What do you think led to his downfall?
Diggers life before he became homeless was hard in the start with his parents leaving him to learn and grow up himself. When digger is 15 he gets a job helping set up a ferris wheel, this changes him. As he worked setting up the wheel he became passionate about it and it made him happy like he was ontop of the world. When his mentor passed away in a wheel accident Digger keeps doing his job but its different this time his partner was gone. Booze to cope and old age got the best of him, he wasnt happy. Over time digger gets older and weaker and the booze didnt help, when he couldnt walk his wheel anymore he quit and his life spiraled from there. He eventually lost his money and home a long with the people who once supported him.
4. Each character will eventually reveal how what their lives looked like before they became homeless. Each character is afraid to reveal these stories. Why do you think they are afraid? Why are these stories so difficult to tell?
I think they would be afraid because most of the time it lead hem to where they are at the moment. Nobody just woke up in bed one day and decided to be homeless its something that drives them away and they may be scared to share because its not something they may be proud of.
5. Is Granite a member of Ragged Company? Why or why not?
In my opinion Granite is apart of the Ragged Company because he had a really strange but good connection with the group when they met. He didnt have a funny reaction that most people would give to homeless people in the movie theatre. The group noticed that and were pleased about it because nobody else had been so accepting of them. He also helps digger with the lotto ticket and over time becomes friends.
6. What do you think each of the characters are going to spend their money on?
Well first i would think they would buy clothes and just clean themselves up. They all don't want the money to separate them so i would assume they would want a house to share. They are gonna have to by the essentials fit for them like liquor or smokes. They love movies so i think a TV and movies would probably be purchased along the way.
7. Describe how the press reacts to the news that the lottery winners are homeless? What questions do they ask that you don’t think they would ask a ‘regular’ winner? Are these questions fair? Why or why not?
The presses first reaction was they were shocked because they did not expect homeless people to be the winners of 13.5 million dollars and they show up looking like people that dont have millions of dollars ya know? They asked questions that were a little more personal because of where they come from so the repporters in a way took advantage of them regareding asking questions because if a normal high class family won i bet they wouldnt ask such personal things. I dont think its fair at all because everyone one should be treated the same no matter how they look or come off as.
8. Identify 5 things from the novel that you think might be symbols of greater ideas or themes.
Dick- Kind, Funny, Loyal, Genuine, Trustworthy, Accepting, Wise
Timber- Kind, Loyal, Genuine, Trustworthy, Accepting, Wise
Granite- Kind, Accepting, Loyal, Genuine, Trustworthy, Wise
Amelia- Kind, Loyal, Admirable, Empathetic, Understanding, Wise, Trustworthy, Accepting
Digger- Loyal, Outgoing, Loud, Accepting, Wise, Trustworthy
9. Who is your favorite character? Why? How do you think this character may change as a result of the money? Make a prediction about how this character might change.
My favourite character in the book is digger because he is very funny and just doesn't care what anyone thinks. I dont think digger would change with money because when they get the money all of them want the money to not change them and i think in the end this is what is gonna bring them all together anyways.
